What did Jim Henson see in Ebeneezer Scrooge?

By Jen Moff

If you have never experienced interacting with the true nature of those with harmful personalities, ones that we here refer to as TOXIC, then check out the song Scrooge from the movie, “The Muppet Christmas Carol”.

Jim Henson’s Studios are amazing at everything they do, including crafting art that educates about the characteristics of someone whose behaviors are toxic. Ebeneezer Scrooge fully exhibits the qualities of unhealthy levels of Narcissism. Here is a clip from the film, it’s a song entirely about Mr. Scrooge. It is sung by those who live in the same community as him, those that see his full personality. Even the animals and fruit know what’s up.

Since I couldn’t create a custom karaoke clip for you, I’ve included the lyrics separately below. Annnnnnd, just to help call out the details in the song that points to Narcissism, I put the specific character traits in bold for ease of identification.

Scrooge

When a cold wind blows it chills you, chills you to the bone

But there’s nothin’ in nature that freezes your heart

like years of being alone

It paints you with indifference like a lady paints with rouge

And the worst of the worst the most hated and cursed

is the one that we call Scrooge

Unkind as any

And the wrath of many

This is that Ebeneezer Scrooge

Oh, there goes Mr. Humbug

There goes Mr. Grim

If they gave a prize for bein’ mean

The winner would be him

Old Scroogy loves his money

‘Cause he thinks it gives him power

If the became a flavor you can be he would be sour

There goes Mr. Skinflint

There goes Mr. Greed

The undisputed master of

The underhanded deed

He charges folks a fortune

For his dark and drafty houses

As poor folk live in misery

Its even worse for mouses

He must be so lonely

He must be so sad

He goes to extremes

To convince us he’s bad

He’s really a victim of fear and of pride

Look close and there must be

A sweet man inside-naaaaah!

There goes Mr. Outrage

There goes Mr. Sneer

He has no time for friends or fun

His anger makes that clear

Don’t ask him for a favor cause his nastiness increases

No crust of bread for those in need

No cheeses for us meeses

There goes Mr. Heartless

There goes Mr. Cruel

He never gives

He only takes

He let’s his hunger rule

If bein’ mean’s a way of life you

Practice and Rehearse

Then all that work is paying off

‘Cause Scrooge is getting worse

Everyday

In every way

Scrooge is getting worse.

Crazy right??? I know. I watched the movie as a little girl and never saw how this behavior could apply to actual humans. Sure the flick is all about redemption, waking up, and yada yada yada, but it is art. And art can be interpreted in so many complex ways.
