What Can Robert Frost Teach Us About Mindfulness

By Jen Moff

“I am not a teacher. I am but an awakener.” ~Robert Frost

What do you think that sentence means?

Robert Frost is one of Americas most popular poets of the 20th century. He was moody, soft-spoken, and quite pensive. So the quote above shouldn’t surprise us.

Awakening refers to the state of being conscious. And to be conscious is a lot like mindfulness, am I right? Let me break it on down for ya.

Read Robert’s poem below…

The Road Not Taken

by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Now, let’s dig in with a big soup spoon!

I just want to ask you a few questions, you know to get the wheels turning in the ole noggin.

1. When reading, did your mind wander away to other thoughts?

2. Could you picture the place he wrote about?

3. Could you sense how he felt?

4. Were you able to apply his story within the poem to a turning point in your life?

Asking questions helps us to be in the present moment and you’ll notice that none of the questions places a judgment on your experience or thoughts while reading. The questions are designed to promote conscious curiosity. Robert wants us to be curious, not just when reading his art, but when we live and breathe and move about our day. Living in the past or the future is keeping us trapped in the darkness of our minds.

Maybe this poem, his work of art isn’t just about making choices, maybe it’s about something deeper. Maybe it allows us the opportunity to live in the moment with him as he makes his choices and reflects without judgment.
