Very rarely do people have a connection with their intuition without any effort. To those that do, congrats! It’s a gift and not one to be taken lightly. For the rest of you, let’s start super simple and build up that muscle.
Let’s hit the gym!!!!!
Using mindfulness techniques to tap into your inner knowing is easy as pie. This is one part mindfulness, one part shadow work, and one part weight training.
Begin by getting into a comfortable space, preferably alone where no one can disturb you or interrupt.
Got that part done? Cool. Moving on to the actual steps.
Step 1: Begin by asking a very specific question that you want the answer to.
Example – Is it the right time for me to move to New York?
Step 2: Allow your mind to do what it wants to do (over-think, worry, etc). Then name the specific fear(s) associate with the question.
Example – No, because I don’t have enough money saved up and I’ll end up on the streets.
Step 3: Once you’ve identified the fear. Say the following and fill in the blank, “ If that is true, then that means _______”?
Tip – The thing you’ll fill in the blank is always about you. It’s about what you may think or believe on a deep level about who you are, what you are capable of, etc. If you are struggling to get there and keep filling it in with stuff about things outside of yourself, take a deep breath and let it go. There is no need to fight what isn’t ready to be brought to the surface.
Step 4: Close your eyes. Reconnect to your body by focusing on your breath. Watch it rise and fall in your chest and abdomen. There is no need to try to control it, just allow it to do what it already does. You are merely observing it.
Step 5: Once you’ve anchored yourself in the present moment via your breath, begin deepening that connection to your body by engaging your senses (this helps you get out of your head where the mind likes to screw around with you). Start with your ears; listening very acutely to the sounds around you. Can you name them? Then engage your sense of touch. Begin rubbing your hands together as if you were trying to start a fire. Feel the sensation and heat arise. Finally, open your eyes and allow your eyes to dance around the room / space you are in without resting on any one object for very long. Just take in the things that are there.
Step 6: Ask the same question again.
Example – Is it the right time for me to move to New York?
Step 7: Answer out loud, immediately, the words you hear, thoughts your have, sensations you feel, or picture that appeared in your mind.
Example – I saw the subway. I saw myself having dinner with new friends. I heard the word “GO”.
[bctt tweet=”There is no need to fight what isn’t ready to be brought to the surface.” via=”no”]This is your intuition talking. Your intuition is constantly speaking to you, but we’ve been trained not to listen to it or trust it by our caregivers, the media, society, etc. All of those external influencers are the building blocks of the mind and fear, which can be so freaking loud. They are strongest when we aren’t connected to ourselves in the now. They thrive in the mind and when it’s connected to the past or the future.
Give the exercise a shot! And keep doing it to build up that muscle. In time it will get stronger and stronger. Which means you’ll be able to hear it more clearly and with a hell of a lot more ease.
